Given the successful implementation of their agreement, the Trustees of MPDL Services gGmbH, the DEAL Operating Entity, and Springer Nature have confirmed the option for a one year extension of their agreement of 8 January 2020. The nationwide DEAL agreement with Springer Nature has enabled more than 12% of the country’s annual research article output over the past three years to be published free of copyright, so that scientists, policy makers, health care workers, educators, and citizens everywhere can benefit from the latest discoveries of German research. It has amply fulfilled the objectives of Projekt DEAL: reorient former subscription spending to provide authors with the means and opportunity to publish their research articles openly and granting learners across Germany equal and permanent access to peer-reviewed scholarly content.
