Agreements

Projekt DEAL’s transformative agreements drive the open access transition in scholarly publishing.

The DEAL agreements support researchers in openly disseminating their peer-reviewed articles by converting former institutional payments for subscriptions (reading) into funds that cover the cost of open access publishing. The agreements reduce the overall costs of scholarly communication, increase the visibility and impact of the new German research, and massively expand readers’ access to knowledge.

The Alliance of Science Organizations in Germany established Projekt DEAL to negotiate transformative open access agreements with the largest academic publishers (Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley). Negotiations of transformative agreements with other publishers are coordinated by German library consortia, including through the Forum 13+ working group.
